Electrical appliances must meet the safety and electromagnetic rules of the market where they are sold. The certification path should be planned at the start of a project, because it can affect components, design and lead time.
European Union
CE marking declares conformity with applicable EU directives, typically the Low Voltage Directive (LVD), the EMC Directive and RoHS for hazardous substances. Germany’s voluntary GS mark indicates tested safety and is valued by many retailers.
North America
Safety listing marks such as ETL (Intertek) or CSA show compliance with North American safety standards. In the United States, FCC rules cover electromagnetic emissions from electronic devices.
Japan and Korea
Japan requires PSE marking under its Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law. South Korea uses the KC mark for electrical products.
CB Scheme
A CB test certificate under the IECEE scheme can simplify obtaining national certifications in participating countries.
